Media Alert Oy Ltd (official trade name Epidem) was founded as a limited company in 1974. Since then Epidem has produced over 200 animation- and documentary films.

Animation concepts and films

In 2002 the company decided to focus only on animation and to develop its own original animation concepts.

The animation films developed and produced by Epidem have been widely distributed internationally and received awards at international festivals and events, among them the Silver Pulcinella award, the Goldenen Grasslöwe environment award and the international UNICEF prize. At the Oulu International Children’s film festival 2011 Epidem was awarded the “Small Bear” prize for its work promoting children’s film culture during the last 40 years.

Epidem has received EU’s Media Slate Funding 1 and Slate funding 2 and lately, in 2015, Creative Europe’s Media Slate Funding development support for it’s children’s animation film slate.

Epidem has a long tradition of co-operating with international co-producers and distributors.

Epidem is run by Jaana and Mikael Wahlforss, who is also one of the founders of the company.

Documentary films

Since Epidem was established in 1974 the company has produced many internationally acclaimed documentary films featuring such prominent directors as Chris Marker (“The Last Bolshevik”), Pirjo Honkasalo (“Mysterion”) and Amos Gitai (“American Dreams”).

Epidem has won the first prize in the Finnish national competition for the best long documentary film three times at the Tampere Film Festival and has been awarded the Finnish National Quality Prize (“Laatutuki”) twenty times. At the DocPoint documentary film festival in Helsinki in January 2009, Epidem received the yearly Apollo prize for its production during the last forty years.
